ABC’s EXTREME MAKEOVER: HOME EDITION SEARCHING FOR

DESERVING FAMILIES

DEADLINE HAS BEEN EXTENDED!!!!

HOLLYWOOD, CA – February 1, 2010

Do you know a family whose home deserves an Extreme Makeover? If so, the producers of ABC’s Extreme Makeover: Home Edition want to hear from you.  Ty Pennington and his crew have been all across the map and now they want to drive that famous bus to Maryland!

“We are looking for the deserving people and inspiring families that America can really root for,” says Casting Supervisor Rebecca Shumsky.

What does it take to be picked for an Extreme Makeover? “We’re looking for those special people who have amazing strength of character and never give up. Whether it’s keeping their chin up in really tough circumstances or going out of their way to help others. We want to help people whose stories have really affected their community or made a big difference in other people’s lives.” Shumsky added: “There are a lot of people who are heroes to those around them because of the way they inspire others and quietly serve their communities on a daily basis.”

The Extreme Makeover: Home Edition producers are looking for families whose homes desperately need to be rebuilt. “We really want to help families whose homes present major problems for the family, those big issues that affect the family’s quality of life on a daily basis. We want to find deserving people who just don’t have the resources, ability, or time to fix those serious issues without our help.”

To be eligible, a family must own their own single family home and be able to show producers how a makeover will make a huge difference in their lives.

Interested families should e-mail a short description of their family story to:

castmaryland@gmail.com

Nominations may be submitted by the family or by a member of their community. Each nomination must include the names and ages of every member of the household along with a description of the major challenges within the home. Anyone submitting a nomination should be sure to explain why the nominated family is deserving, heroic, and/or a great role model for their community. If possible, include a recent photo of the family. All nominations must include a contact phone number.

The deadline for nominations is April 2, 2010. Don’t delay!

I would really like the opportunity to help my sister. She is 62 years old and has been a widow for 7 years. Due to depression she has let the house completely deteriorate. She also has 4 dogs that have ruined her home. Between the dogs and her inability to repair the damage, the odor has permeated throughout the house, the furniture, and her clothing. She is embarrassed to have ANY company over, including her daughter. She loves working with children and has dedicated her time to being a teacher for infants and toddlers. Her salary is minimum wage and she just gets by. She has no means to take care of her home, or any type of renovation on her own. She desperately needs assistance to help her have a life again, and a home that she can be proud to call home. I really hope you can help her.

  • Mackenzy

Sorry Koren but so many familys are suffering from people loosing there jobs and having only one family income and barley making it with having children with serious health issues and themselves. Your sister can relieve her depression on her own if she wants to but you cant make anyone be happy when there all alone. she needs to make better descions for herself not someone trying to make them for her. i understand that she may be a very nice person and all but there are more other families out there that deserve the help more than you sister does. Good luck.

    Hi ABC, Ty & crew,
You do such a wonderful job-words can’t describe it! I’ve been praying for my mom & dad a decent house. They are 74 yrs. old-raised 5 children & 1 grandchild plus babysit great grand children. Their house is a moldy dump. Dad has sinus and breathing problems, & headaches. They’ve both worked really hard-constuction and cleaning. Dad rescued a neighbor 1 day that was under her lawn mower. He plows & blows snow for neighbors. They’ve rescued people hung up, gave up their bed for some kids from Pa. 1 time, caught in snow storm. Mom’s sewed quilts for lots of babies and adults. She taught Sunday School for years. Come see Deep Creek Lake!

  • Janet Watkins

My moms name is Juanita Watkins, she is recently widowed and struggling to maintain her home on her own, a light of things needing to be done in the home is lacking since the death of my dad. She needs so much work done and can not do it her self. It would be a great blessing to have you come and make a difference in her life and home. There are windows that need to be replace, doors, roof, bathroom downstairs would be convenient, there is so much that need to be done I can’t even name, my mom spends her days helping other Seniors like herself, and helping someone else and need help herself, she rarely complains. So I would like to see this makeover for her become a reality, she is so deserving.

  • Wilma Stemple

This is Wilma Stemple. You requested names. I forgot to put my parents names in my nomination paragraph. Their names are William & Betty Ream. We will try to send a photo.

  • Mandy DeWitt

Hello ABC Extreme Makeover home Edition: thanks for making people’s lives better. I have been hoping that one day my grandparents would have a nice home to live in! The house is over 100 years old and termed “condemned.” They can not even purchase homeowner’s insurance for the home. The floors are unlevel and mold and mildew permeate the house. The outside of the house consists of shingles and the roof is covered with tar paper. They are 74 years old and the sweetest people I have ever known. My grandparents would do anything for anyone and have raised 5 children and 1 grandchild. Plus, my grandmother babysits for me when I need her. She has taught Sunday school for many years in the past. We live in an Appalachian culture here at Deep Creek Lake, MD and my family would love to see my grandparents have a home instead of a shack to live in. They are both hardworkers…my pap worked for the road construction union and my grandma cleaned houses for many years. My grandpap loves to hunt and fish. He helps others all the time. My grandmother makes quilts for babies and the elderly in nursing homes.Their income is limited. Names…William and Betty Ream… Thank you for your time!

  • Joan Eisenhardt

I am nominating my sister Tracey McCreery for a makeover. She has given up her life to raise her three grandchildren. Her husband can bearly walk, falls often and needs assistance he also suffers with diabetes. My sister has a bad back and lung disease. Her one grandson has a heart problem, she lives in a home with a heating system over 100 years old, no central air and in need of rentovation. She has given up her life to assist raising her family. She takes in animals and helps everyone and needs a little help herself. The kids share rooms and my sister has no bedroom, sleeps on the sofa in the living room. Her husband sleeps in a small room in the back of the house. She has had the kids and her daughter with her since birth. She sacrifices for them and now is assisting another grandchild with a different illness. They have a half bath on the main level and my brother in law, sits on his butt, challenging to go upstairs to bathe. How he gets up the steps is a mystery. She is disabled as is my brother in law and they need some help as they have given up everything to keep their family together.

  • Dawn Brown

I would nominate my sister. Our mom passed away 4 years ago and my sister is now the Matriarch. My brother was the only boy of 6 children and he passed before our Mother. She works a job with little pay. She makes enough to pay her bills but not maintain the home that my mom and dad worked hard to get She also works hard to maintain her home but seems to be a collector. She has Barbies when they first came out. She has the real G. I. Joe dolls and other antiques that she saved from her grandmother. She has a host of grandchildren and family that love to spend time with her and there is no where for them to really sleep. She loves to have bbq’s and entertain, but we barely have a place to sit. She is sort of a hoarder but with order. lol She is always helping others in the family and neighborhood cooking food. She is the first to rush to your side in an emergency. She always puts herself last in any endeavor. My sisters and I are in love with our older sister and want her happiness just like she wants us to be happy. This would truly make her smile and make us (her sisters) smile also. 4108007111

Looking for a site for homeless shelter for women and that children be able to accomodate at least 7 families.” Come All ye Heavy Ladened” in the Baltimore Maryland. This site would provide daycare while parents look for stable employment. Training to parents to obtain grants to purchase their own homes and establish their own businesses within 1 year of entering the shelter.

  • Deborah Wells

This could really be a prayer and dream come true. My wish and desire has been to establish a Shelter for Homeless women with children. This shelter would be unique in that it would provide fresh starts and new beginning for 7 families minimum. This Loving home setting will provided a nurturing atmosphere for the parents inthat it would offer training ingrant writing to assist those who have dreams of business ownership and home ownership because there would be staff to assist in grant writing to obtain funding for downpayments for their new homes as well as grant writing to obtaing funding to start their own business.Helping these parents to tap into their ability to make their dreams become reality through their own creativity while their children have a safe haven with in the daycare center that is on the site provide a nurturing atmospherefor both parent and child(dren). Been Searching for a site to make this possible .This will be and a gift that keeps on giving these families will be able to seek the security and establish their dreams within a year then another family can take their place as they move into their manifested reality

  • Pamela Bush

I have been a friend of Connie Mohr, now married to husband Bob, for over 30 years (at which time I was her pastor’s wife); and I have never known her to have an easy life, yet a loving, giving person always showing concern for others and doing whatever she can to try to better her life….a life which has been riddled with much serious illness and which presently has her in a nursing facility, as her home is not fit for anyone to live in. (I don’t believe they will release her until it is) Actually, it is my understanding it has been condemned. She and Bob live on a very meager income, have sought every means they know to receive some kind of help and are in a desperate situation. They are very humble people and would deeply appreciate even the least little thing anyone could do for them. They would not expect “big and fancy” but “functional and comfortable.” The city in Maryland is Loch Lynn, and I know there are friends and church family and others who would be pleased to help this worthy couple. Thank you.

  • Donna Webster

    Hi ABC, Ty & crew,
I’m not sure that you can help my sister Katie, because she does not own her home. But if there were ever a chance for her to have her own home it would be a great blessing. Katie was born with Myelomeningocele. She will be 55 yr/old this June. She adopted a son Joush when he was just a few days old who is now 17. Katie has always baby sat for many people accepting what ever they could afford. She is wheel chair bound now and has been for a few years…she has just gone through shoulder surgery because she has to use her arms to move the wheel chair and when she try’s to clean she gets on the floor and drags herself around. Katie use to work for the board of education turtoring children in elementary school. She continues to mentor children in elementary schools today. Katie loves to write story’s for children and helps any way she can in the community. If there were a small handicap accessible home to help her move around, easier than where she currently lives with a small fenced in back yard so she can continue to watch young children or tutor from home, that would give her something to do and look forward to and she would be able to afford small luxury items like a reliable car that holds her wheel chair and not constantly breaking down. Our family tries to help as much as possibe but …well thats another story. I am really proud of all her accomplishments that she has been able to do on her own and she has never complained of her own disablities. Thank you for your help and suggestions in this matter.

  • Danny Crowley

I would like to nominate Joe Sclafani. Joe was Paralized last year just before Thanksgiving and his chances of ever walking again are Very Slim. He is only 37 years old with a wife, Monica, and two young girls. It is virtually impossible for Monica to manuver Joe around their house. ABC has done such a great job over the years by helping families in Extreme circumstances, that I feel by looking at the Sclafani family situation would inspire Extreme Home Makeover to come running to save yet another family!!

  • Tami Sinclair

folks living in trailers who are putting up their kids, grandkids and great-grandkids dont need Extreme Home Makeover. They need sex ed for their damned children or vasectomies or something!

I still do not get how the most hard-luck people keep popping out kids.

If you are poor now, why would you think having another mouth to feed would make any sense whatsoever?

No one should get this opportunity if they are raising their grandkids because their kids are failures. Your kids being f**k ups and you having to take them in shoudnlt qualify you.

Sadly the most deserving are the ones who would never, ever, ever think of asking for this and here is to hoping we find them.

Just being out of work doesnt qualify, either for those on the “hubby is out of work” deal. because while it might not be for the SAME pay, anyone can walk out the door and get A job right now.

Wendys is hiring and while that’s minimum wage and cant feed a family its more than what a man with no job is currently earning.

    Sorry.

Let’s hope this goes to someone who made GOOD life decisions but has had BAD things happen to them and not folks who made too many kids or f**ked up everything.

  • Bonnie Major

I would like to nominate my friends, Chad and Lucy Campbell and thier 8 children: Spencer (17), Tori (15), Kirsten(12), Caleb (6), Levi (5), Joel (3), Chloe (1), and Jesse (2 months). They live in Oakland, MD and are in desperate need of a new home. Thier current home is too small and in need of several repairs. Chad has his own painting business but does whatever odd job he can to support his family but struggles to find work. Even in this situation, Chad is always willing to help anyone who needs his help. We couldn’t afford to pay to a professional to seal our home, so he waived his fee and did it for free! All we had to do is pay for the supplies. Lucy stays home with the kids and homeschools them. She is such a patient and loving mother. This family is so giving to the community and church, it’s time to give back to them. I hope and pray that you seriously consider them for a new home make over. Once you get to know them, you will also see what a great family they are and how much they deserve this wonderful oppurtunity! Thank you for your time.

  • Marie Brenneman

  • Kristina Browning

I somewhat feel selfish in nominating myself or my families home but unfortunately i have been left with no other choices. We moved to PA 3 years ago and bought a home that was over 100 years old. My husband thought it would be great project for him to work on but it has done nothing but stress our family and marriage. He finds himself working 7 days a week and sometimes til early morning so we can make our mortgage. We bought the house 3 years ago, both having work and me planning on finding a job closer but i still travel and hour and a half away. Unseen circumstances came about and we were blessed with a new baby and 2 days after returning to work after maternity leave, my husband lost half of his thumb on a work accident. Workmen’s Comp set in but the bills started piling up and than in 2008 has to claim bankruptcy. We spend about $11,000/yearly in gas to work. Of course when it rains it pours….so bills to bankruptcy hoping to get us back afloat, our mortgage went up but our income went down. We are trying to stay afloat but everywhere we turn, its either i make too little (Obama) to get help or when my husband was just working in Annapolis so we could save on gas, the place he worked was having their own financial issues which than lead to my husbands checks bouncing or being turned away. of course he would get repaid but too late to avoid any damage to finances. Our house is partially torn apart, the kids rooms are nothing but shells and we can no longer to afford to get materials. We have found partially supported floors where the support beams were cut and tomato stakes were “holding” the other part of the floor. Electrical issues, one after another. And should i mention, we cannot drink our well water due to the extreme amount of Manganese and was told before closing, that the levels were borderline so they considered it “safe”. Now the levels have reach a highpoint and there is nothing else we can do. We cannot afford to move the well or to get anything to help take the Manganese out of the water. We already have state supported filters due to a gas leak but they say the manganese is not their concern and has nothing to do with the past gas leak. I can go on and on but too much to list. Please help before we loose our home financially OR structurely!

I watch this show every time it’s on , the work that is done and the things you do to change peoples life is just amazing!
I would really really wants this , my parents have been living in the same house forever and it looks the same, it’s always cluttered with stuff because it’s way to small everything is just old. They have people come in to fix things and they are never done right and money is spent and gone and the problem is even worse. My brother passed away on October 16th,2003. On October this year it will be the 7th year anniversery of his passing. It’s so sad to see my mom the way she is still today, the stress and everything she is going through, my dad never has time to fix nothing because he always works, and then he got laid off for his job after working for 30 Years losses all of that time and had to start over with a lower paying job , it litterly brought it down $15.00 an hour. My dad has been raising my family for these 7 years with one income. We use to be a family of six , i have my brother Matt who has passed away, Steven ,19 , David 18 and me i am 20. I just want them to have the life everyone dreams of having, a nice kitchen that is organized, and living room that can acually fit a coffee table in it, not to mention my parents room , it is definitly not a space to go home to after a long day of work, there is no happiness , its always fustration and to much to handle They need this, i want them to be happy again and since my brother passed it took so much money out of my dads pocket , our family was struggling for a long time and still we’re not on our feet. I just want them to wake up every morning in a new house with no memories of our past life, our house has to many memories, 18 years of his life was in that house and i just want a fresh start with no problems to worry about. I wish you can help , this would be such a miracle to happen!

Hi my name is Carla I have three beautiful children Sidney Grace 11yrs. old,Noah Mason 4 & LilyBeth 2. I suffer from several mental illness’s. Severe Depression, Bipolar,PTSD,Mood disorder’s,ADD,Multiple Personality Disorders & many more I can’t spell. On August 4,2004 I woke up and my new born was blue. I called the police for help here I was all alone wth my 5yr. old & Emma 25 days old not breathing I listened to the dispatcher trying to explain CPR on my 7lb. newborn while Sidney was saying mommy just feed her she is fine. Ya know there were only three of us in that apartment but It felt like more. It wasn’t long after I was giving Emma CPR that the paramedics got there and took over it was like I was in a terrible nightmere then they were gone w/ her they wouldn’t let me ride with her. I never understood why? Since then I married again which is when I gave birth to my two sweet youngest children Noah & LilyBeth. Now I’m seperated from my husband he couldn’t handle me he called me ugly words like crazy “B” in front of the kids plus more much more. He moved us to a broken down shack in Stuart VA. it was not fit for a family of 5 people that is. Maybe mice but not people!!!! I just found out yesterday 1/14/11 that my disability was denied. I didn’t cry I just sat there in shock! How could this happen I really need this I suffer daily taking all these pills & they desided no. I don’t have a home but I do have i acre my Father is giving me. My parents are in thier late 60′s & 70′s and lost thier home to forclosure about 3 yrs ago. • Robert Jones

Hello I am Robert Jones and I am submitting a request for my sister. I didn’t submit an application because I understand that the individual must be the homeowner that you consider. However I ‘m going out on a limb for my sister who is married and has 2 sons 1 grown and austistic, and the other 16 living along with her husband in a 2 bedroom apartment where they have been for over 15 years renting. Not only are the boys sharing a room but now that they are older it’s getting pretty tight in their space. My sister is a loving mother and wife who tends to her boys around the clock. Where as The elder son needs to be assisted @ all times he doesn’t speak he can use words but yet doesn’t know how to use them in sentences. If something is bothering him he coudn’t tell you, often times he wakes up in the middle of the night crying no 1 knows why, he has bowel movements on himself from time to time and is not capable of cleaning himself. So just imagine he and his mom in the bathroom together that is so small that you can barely put a extra roll of tissue in it. My nephew also has been known to have seisures from time to time. He’s on medication and a special diet that’s pretty costly she can barely maintain. He’s been known to attack his family physically not knowing that he can possibly hurt them. When she’s away from the house she volunteers @ the day care @ the church she attends. She has a heart of gold and will give you the shirt off of her back. If you would consider helping her out we will be forever grateful. If you are considering us by any chance please contact me via email at icurnoz@yahoo.com. thank you .

Hi, I just printed an application to be considered. I know this is a long shot and a small chance we will be chosen, but my family is desperate. We are renting to own our home, and were doing all the repairs to the home so we could afford it because we have had to live in hotels and even our cars before and cant go through that again as I have brothers and sisters as well as a 2 year old daughter my self. Well, our home just got condemned last week and we had to leave our home immediately. We did recieve alittle help by the code enforcement, they put us in a motel room but that will be up next week and we are facing being homeless again, when the main reason we were trying to buy a home was to avoid this. We are struggling and just for once wanted stability, as my mom and I are both single moms with very little money and have bad credit. Therefore it is hard to find someone who will let us rent, if we did find a place, due to being evicted many times. They said if we get the work done we can move back in. However, we cannot do the work ourselves and have no money to do it or even find another home on. The back of our home has deteriorated and was falling down due to the piers underneath falling apart, our back wall actually came off the house due to being rotten. So we were up all night trying our best to frame another wall and put ply wood up before an inspector could see it, but there was just nothing to support it because the whole back was rotten and bowed downwards and the peirs are about to fall apart any minute. I am really praying for some kind of help somewhere, I know in my heart it will come because we are very giving people and have always tried to help others when we were able, we always give what we dont need to others in need, so I really believe someone will help us. If not I know that I tried, and we will keep pressing on. Thanks so much for your time and reading my heart felt words and plea for help! GOD BLESS!
