Mumford & Sons are set to hit the road in August, likely debuting songs from their upcoming album, out September 24.
The tour marks the band’s official return to the U.S. and will include four stopover shows that will set up camp in multiple cities for all day long events featuring music and local flair. The Gentlemen of the Road series is teaming up with locally-owned businesses in Portland, MA; Bristol VA/TN.; Dixon, IL; and Monterey, CA to put on summer festivals that will highlight the culture of those cities, including stalls from local vendors and after parties at local venues.
Unlike your typical summer music festival, an official spokesperson explains that, “The Stopovers combine the intimacy of a community celebration with the excitement of a world-class music festival.”
On the Gentlemen of the Road website, the band adds that the events will be “one epic party.”
In case you do not live near any of the stopover locations, the rest of the tour spans the U.S. and hits lesser-known cities like Lincoln, NE and Morrison, CO. The band is forgoing big arenas and major cities to recreate some of their favorite music gatherings, like Colorado’s Telluride Bluegrass Festival and Scotland’s Loopallu Festival. They explain on their website: “We want to stop off in towns where bands don’t usually tour, and celebrate the local people, food and music.”
As a band that has played Glastonbury Festival and Coachella, their local approach could come as a surprise, but Mumford & Sons originally got their start in the tight-knit London folk scene playing small venues. And unlike most pop music, their rootsy bluegrass-inspired tunes are founded in the musical influence of small communities.
While the Gentlemen of the Road stopover series has already sold out, pre-sale for the rest of the tour starts Thursday, with general on-sale on Friday.
