Maryland is a land of inspiration as it is the birthplace of Harriet Tubman, an American hero. The state is breaking ground this weekend on a park to honor her on the centennial of her passing. To learn more about her extraordinary efforts as a freedom seeker, journey along the Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad Byway.
The byway takes you to a landscape of marshes and waterfront towns filled with not only history, but shops, galleries and restaurants. The byway can be traveled in a variety of ways besides driving: you can bike on relatively flat roads or paddle through the scenic waterways.
On Saturday, Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge, which is a byway stop, hosts its annual eagle festival.
