As promised, M.I.A. released the lead single from her fifth studio album this morning: “Go Off,” a Skrillex collaboration that sees her returning to frenzied, political, globetrotting form. The spare production and haunting instrumental sample make a menacing and urgent statement about refugees and the advent of technology. And of course she saves time to toot her own horn.
“Fans back home Got my tracks bang on / Yeah you got it wrong,” she proclaims. “Cause my focus is so strong.”
That “focus” seems right at home in 2016. As terrorism, refugee crises, immigration concerns, and smartphones captivate global consciousness, M.I.A.’s musical perspective on the world feels more immediate than ever. Fans of early albums Arular and Kala should enjoy “Go Off,” a clear restatement of her sound and warning shot for what’s to come on AIM, due out September 9.
