What does Kanye West listen to when he’s not working on his own music? He answered that question as well as his intention to run for president in 2020 on the BBC today (August 1).
West hasn’t been able to get enough of Francis and the Lights’ new song “Friends” featuring Bon Iver. He said it was his “favorite record of the year.” He even appears in the video for the track. About the man behind Bon Iver, Justin Vernon, West said, “I love Justin the way Kanye loves Kanye.” West sampled Bon Iver’s “Wolves” for his track “Lost in the World” in 2010, and the two seem to have remained creatively close.
Moving away from other artists’ music and discussing his own, West said when he makes music, he’s aware of all the different ways people listen to music, whether in their car, on their laptop or live at his shows, which is why it can take longer for his music to reach the public. “This types of art takes a while to cook,” he admitted.
“I’m excited to play with these different kind of melodies and tempos as I organize the story of the tour,” he added, referencing his upcoming The Life of Pablo Tour.
And West was serious when he claimed he would run in the next presidential election. “When I talk about the idea of being president, I’m not saying I have any political views,” he said. “I don’t have views on politics, I just have a view on humanity, on people, on the truth. If there is anything that I can do with my time and my day, to somehow make a difference while I’m alive I’m going to try to do it.” Come 2020, West will throw his name into the political ring. Or, in his case, the not very political ring.
