Lots of countries hand out bonuses for athletes who bring home an Olympic medal.
In the U.S., you get $25,000 for a gold medal in Rio, but you don’t get a penny for getting a silver or bronze medal.
But the country the gives the biggest amount for a gole medal is Singapore. Their bonus is $753,000. How can they afford it, you ask? Simple, they’ve never even won a gold medal. And there’s no indication they’ll start this year.
Indonesia is paying out $383,000. They’ve won six in their history. Same for Azerbaijan, which pays $255,000.
Some countries, including the U.K., do not give out any bonuses.
