From completing a world tour to becoming the most-followed person on Instagram, Selena Gomez’s plate of professional obligations is no small undertaking. In addition, she’s faced persistent public scrutiny (about her body, relationships, family) and endured a lupus diagnosis which prompted chemotherapy.
Earlier this summer, Gomez shared a message that she just wasn’t feeling it anymore, but now she has taking action and announced that she’s taking a hiatus from the entertainment industry to help her address “anxiety, panic attacks and depression.”
“I want to be proactive and focus on maintaining my health and happiness and have decided that the best way forward is to take some time off,” she said in a statement to People. “Thank you to all my fans for your support. You know how special you are to me, but I need to face this head on to ensure I am doing everything possible to be my best. I know I am not alone by sharing this, I hope others will be encouraged to address their own issues.”
It’s not clear how long the break will last, but her reps were quick to shoot down questions about substance abuse treatment. It appears Gomez just needs a time-out from the pressure cooker of fame.
