Dogs play fetch. Cats purr and look cute and even hamsters provide some form of entertainment. But if you thought that goldfish you won in the 6th grade was a total snoozefest, turns out – it has a wild streak.
Your goldfish may be be getting drunk while you’re at work. New research published in Scientific Reports says goldfish have the ability to produce alcohol that allows them to survive in frozen over waters when oxygen is hard to come by.
When oxygen levels drop carp have the ability to convert carbohydrates into alcohol. Mother Nature Network reports the process is similar to humans when carbs are metabolized without oxygen. Instead of alcohol though – humans produce lactic acid. Carp though turn those carbs into ethanol which gets released.
And you thought fish were the boring ones?! But just how tipsy are these fish getting? The study says their blood alcohol levels can reach 3 ounces!
